Labiaplasty (Labia Reduction)
There are some very personal concerns a woman might have about her body that may be too embarrassing to discuss even with her closest friends. Many women secretly are self conscious about or have physical discomfort from stretched, enlarged, or misshapen inner labia (labia minora). Dr. Mark Solomon, a caring and supportive plastic surgeon who has been helping his patients with problems like these for many years, is an excellent source of information, solutions, and support for labia reduction surgery.
Improvements from Labia Reduction
Labiaplasty, also called labia reduction or labia surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that reshapes elongated and enlarged labia to:
- Improve the appearance of the labia
- Reduce pain or discomfort experienced when wearing fitted clothing or riding a bicycle
- Reduce embarrassment and self-consciousness
- Enhance sexual intercourse
- Repair damage due to childbirth, sexual activity, or the aging process
During your private consultation, Dr. Solomon will discuss your concerns, perform a brief physical exam, and determine the most appropriate surgical technique for you. He understands that this can be a very private concern so he makes compassion and discretion a top priority.
Experienced and Qualified Surgeon
Philadelphia and New York plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Solomon has over 20 years of plastic surgery experience and has personally performed hundreds of labiaplasty procedures. He is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Solomon also was known as a specialist in labiaplasty during his time as Chief of Surgery at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University.
Dr. Solomon usually performs labiaplasty cosmetic surgery for women as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with or without sedation. Dr. Solomon strives to maintain the natural coloring, shape, and sensation of the labia while concealing incisions inside the natural labial folds. The procedure usually takes about an hour to complete and most patients feel very little pain. Unless you choose to have surgery using only local anesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home and help you for the first day after surgery.
Recovery and Results
During your recovery, Dr. Solomon recommends using cold compresses and frequent sitz baths to increase comfort and facilitate healing. The skin of the labia is much like the skin on the inside of the mouth as it heals readily and scars minimally. Sutures will dissolve within the first few weeks. Any pain can be managed with prescription medication.
After labia reduction most women can return to light activity, including work, within three to four days. You can usually return to more strenuous activity, including intercourse, in about one month. Allowing adequate time for recovery is an important aspect of achieving lasting and satisfying results.
Although it is natural to be uncomfortable about seeking help for this problem, our patients are usually very happy and relieved that they did so. Think of how much better you'll feel both emotionally and physically. Many women who have reduced sexual sensation due to their excess skin can experience a positive change during intercourse after treatment.
